Offroad dump-pipe
Well I had a brilliant idea after talking with Stephen Kasper at Imagine Auto that I needed to not only get headers, but also to make a dump-pipe for when I run on the track.
The images of Porsche turbo race cars winning races with flames shooting out from uder the bumbers was driving me on. "I MUST HAVE FLAMES ALSO!", I thought. So I developed a plan.
I had an extra stock muffler because My car now has some huge can on it (GHL I think).
So my thought was this, I would cut the flange and tip off of the stock muffler.
Then would I get a piece of appropraite U-bend, stainless, mandrel bent tubing and make a "flame thrower" of my own!
But there was a problem. I mis-measured my CLR and even the tightest bend I could find would put my pipe much too low for appearance and for clearance.
Now my dimentia turned to depseration. I had cut up my exhaust and had my welder all ready to go, I needed to shoot flames!
I considered using half of my bend to have an exit where my license plate normally is. I allready have a hole here to allow heat to escape from my bumper when the street muffler is on the car.
After measuring and test fitting, I saw that this would not really work. It also would have required me to make a cheap L bend out of my cool u-bend. So I put the naked flange on the turbo and test fit the tip of the stock muffler, by mounting it backwards I was able to get a decent orientation.
I tacked and welded...and welded...and welded (the muffler had been deformed by heat and impacts over the year so I had to try to compensate by ruuning extra beed along it and one spot had gone thin and burned through!) Anyway I got it done.
It sounds wild, not as loud as I had expected (my street exhaust is fairly loud) but definately mean!
rolling acceleration 2nd-3rd (you can hear the tires loose grip at 5seconds, this is at over 60mph!)
Now if I can only get my brother to follow me around the track long enough to get some video of the flames!
