Club Antigua

Antigua

One of the Leeward islands of the West Indies.  A beautiful ex-English island that has historically been a sugarcane producing island.  Now of course, it is reliant on tourism for a lot of its industry.  We went in August as a family vacation.

On the grounds of the hotel.  Many of the palm trees were sporting metal bands from a hurricane of several years before.  The resort is now the Jolly Beach Resort http://www.jollybeachresort.com/.  It was called Club Antigua when we were there.  Not bad overall but it was showing its age around the edges.

More of the grounds.  They had a pool etc etc.  The nightly entertainment was quite good with reggae bands etc.  Especially if you were a little drunk . . .
We hired a driver for an island tour & saw the sights.

English Harbour with the restored British naval base -  known as Nelson's Dockyard built in 1784.  Reportedly, Nelson didn't enjoy his time here.

The hot & hazy Shirley Mountains from the sea during a snorkeling expedition.

There were a lot of jellyfish in the ocean while we were there.  Big ones & really small ones - everywhere.  You had to dodge them in the water.

The island of Montserrat - only 24 miles to the southwest of Antigua -  shimmers on the horizon just visible in the photo at left.

On our last night, the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted in the early evening.  This was a big one.
