Replacement Porsche 914 Wiring Harnesses
The engine bay wiring harnesses in our Porsche 914 cars are vitally important components and are exposed to severe degradation and contamination from heat, vibration, rain, oil and just ordinary handling. The original wiring in these cars is 30 years old and new OEM wiring harnesses are not available for our 914s anymore. The unique original parts for harness repairs are nearly impossible to find…you will not find them at your neighborhood hardware store or even at the best German car parts stores. Used original wiring harnesses can be found, but 30 year old wiring harnesses, unless they have been stored in a warehouse, are at the end of their service life. Heat degradation and fluid contamination cause the harness casing, protective rubber boots and wire insulation to harden, crack and break off, eventually causing internal wiring harness shorts. Vibration contributes to wire breakage at wire terminals and intermittent contact. Dirt and corrosion at the wire terminal connections inhibit electrical conductivity. 30 years of disconnecting and reconnecting the connectors from the engine simply wears the wiring harnesses out and causes them to fail. With any of these conditions you could be sitting by the side of the road instead of straightening out the curvy roads. Installing carbs is not your only option, and may not be the best solution either.
I rebuild and repair the critical engine bay wiring harnesses for the Porsche 914. I make replacement wiring harnesses for the harnesses that see the most abuse and deterioration because I want to do my part to keep these great cars on the road for many years to come. Not surprisingly, many customers have conveyed to me how these replacement harnesses have cured long term, previously undiagnosed problems such as intermittent stumbling, a bouncy tach, a faulty idle, lean/rich conditions, or that replacing or repairing a harness was the actual solution to what was thought to be a faulty fuel injector, bad pressure sensor, defective coil or an electrical system charging problem.
Let me explain what I mean by ‘rebuilt’. I would eagerly call these harnesses ‘new’ except that certain original hard plastic housings and other miscellaneous parts which are no longer available new, and only where those items are perfectly serviceable, are reused. Everything else is new. New correctly color-coded wire, new wire harness casing, new wire terminals, new rubber boots…you get the idea. My list of satisfied 914 customers is extensive, and these harnesses have helped keep the factory fuel injection on many 914 cars.
The research and development required to make these harnesses to the high quality that they are is extensive, including rigorous in-service testing. They may appear easy to make but do not be fooled into thinking you could do your own in a few hours, they are much more difficult than they appear. Over four years in development and testing, each FI harness takes most of a day to fabricate, with all the correct parts, special tools and experience on hand. You receive the benefit of all of these things at the lowest price possible and with quick delivery, with the purchase of each harness. My replacement harnesses are configured identically to the original OEM factory wiring harnesses and are handcrafted to exacting standards using new, OEM or better quality components, without being overbuilt. New high-count multi-strand copper wiring with correct color coding and upsized wire gages is used with OEM wire terminals, durable black harness casing and rubber boots at connector housings, reusing only original hard plastic parts where serviceable. These wiring harnesses feature extra-tough rubber boots and reinforcements at critical wire terminals and internally to the harness, for long-lasting durability. Great care is taken in the workmanship of every harness, and each harness is comprehensively bench-tested during fabrication and again at completion. Each harness includes an electrical circuit diagnosis and installation diagram to make the installation of each harness a simple task.

Wiring Harness Repairs
At the present
time there are a few 914 wiring harnesses that I do not rebuild as listed
below, but your wiring harness may be repairable if its
in reasonably good condition. If your
existing wiring harness only needs minor attention, maybe you just need a free
repair quote? Just Ask.

914/4 Porsche Manifold Pressure Sensor (MPS) Certified Evaluation and
Calibration Services
For the D-Jet 1.7L
and 2.0L cars, I have the specialized equipment and knowledge to evaluate the
condition and performance of the 914/4 Porsche MPS. The 1.7L and 2.0L MPS units are functionally similar, the different part numbers are merely calibrated to
different parameters. A serviceable 1.7L
MPS can be recalibrated to 2.0L MPS parameters and vice-versa. Evaluation and recalibration services include
a written certification of before/after parametrics
and return shipping. For MPS units you
wish to buy or sell, a Certified MPS would be worthwhile.

One tool I built which is a really big help in my harness quality control, is a breakout box that plugs in between the ECU and ECU connector on the FI harness. I had to sacrifice an ECU and FI harness to make this one, but given that so many harnesses have been built with it to save other 914s I reasoned that it was a responsible sacrifice. The red jacks are 12V sources, the blacks are ground and the whites are various ECU signals. I just insert the probes from my multimeter, and the diagram at each jack tells what values are required.
